What Is the National Guild of Hypnotists?

The National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) was founded in Boston, Massachusetts in 1951 by Dr. Rexford L. North. It is the world's oldest and largest professional hypnosis organisation — with members across more than 100 countries. The NGH maintains a published code of ethics, peer-reviewed standards, an annual convention, and a formal credentialing system that has been operating continuously for over seven decades.

Its primary professional credential is the Certified Consulting Hypnotist (CCH) — a designation recognised internationally and held by practitioners in clinical settings, private practice, corporate environments, and research institutions worldwide. The NGH has been commended twice in the United States Congressional Record for its contribution to advancing the profession of hypnotism.

What Is an Official NGH Chapter — and Why Does It Matter?

The NGH operates through a network of official chapters — regional bodies that represent the Guild in a specific country or territory. A chapter is not the same as an approved school, an affiliated trainer, or a certified instructor. The distinction is structural and significant.

India currently has one official NGH Chapter. Dr. Maruti Sharma is a licensed clinical psychologist registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) — a statutory body under the Government of India. RCI registration is mandatory for anyone practising clinical psychology in India. It signifies a formal, government-recognised standard of clinical competence.

He is, to our knowledge, the only RCI-licensed clinical psychologist in India delivering NGH hypnotherapy certification. This matters because hypnosis — when used therapeutically — operates at the intersection of psychology, neuroscience, and clinical ethics.
